MOTORING NEWS - The newly launched Mini Countryman is all about the spirit of discovery with space for five people, boot space and an optional AWD system.
On the one hand, it is more expensive than a small SUV, but on the other hand it is a less expensive and more fun choice than many of the luxury models.
It is still probably one of the most appropriate vehicles to go exploring beyond the limits of tar roads, as AutoDealer experienced during a recent launch near Plettenberg Bay. Autodealer drove the beautiful Prince Alfred's Pass between Knysna and Uniondale - a real adventure on what is often called Thomas Bain's masterwork.
So it can be taken as read that the vehicle has a considerable appetite for adventure.
Mini has teamed up with Italian company Autohome to produce a roof tent, inspired by the current design of Mini product portfolio.
Autohome specialises in producing roof tents for cars and has more than 50 years of experience in the business.
The model designed for the new Countryman can be ordered directly from Mini dealerships in two colours - white or black, in keeping with the contrasting colours for roof and outside mirror caps of the crossover vehicle.
When closed, the tent looks like a normal transport box and is aerodynamically optimised for lower fuel consumption.
Inside, the tent is 94cm high and it is rainproof.
The device is installed on the standard roof rails and opening is simply a matter of releasing the safety clasps. The tent is automatically raised by means of four gas pressure springs.
Inside, the tent is 94cm high and it is rainproof. It also offers good ventilation properties as well as a high level of heat and noise insulation, according to the supplier of the tent.
It has a stable cover and outer walls in special high-quality fabric.
Some of the features of the tent include a high-density mattress with cotton cover, two doors and two windows with zips, close-meshed mosquito nets at all openings, and a battery-operated LED interior light.
Local availability is still to be confirmed.
