MOSSEL BAY NEWS - KwaNonqaba police have opened an attempted murder docket as well as an assault on police members following a shooting incident early this morning.
Preliminary information reveals that two members were on patrol in Scholtz Street, KwaNonqaba early this morning at about 03:30 when they approached two suspects (males) walking in the street.
Upon requesting them to stop in order to interrogate them, they refused and kept on walking.
When the crew on the patrol van approach them, a scuffle ensued whereby the suspect produced a panga and tried to hack the police official with it. The other suspect ran away. The driver then stepped out of his vehicle to assist his colleague when an unknown suspect attacked him from behind.
In an attempt to disarm the police official, two shots were allegedly discharged from his firearm. After the suspects fled the scene, members heard a sigh from a shack in close proximity of the incident.
On closer investigation they found a 60-year-old woman that was wounded in the neck, allegedly by a projectile discharged from the policeman’s service pistol. She was transported to the Mossel Bay hospital where she has been admitted for medical treatment.
Her condition has been described as stable. The attempted murder docket will be investigated by IPID (Independent Police Investigative Directorate) whilst the assault on police members will be investigated by the local KwaNonqaba detectives.
