GREAT BRAK RIVER NEWS - Much to the delight of residents, work on the upgrade of Long Street and Stasie Road in Great Brak River finished ahead of schedule despite the impact of the various Covid-related lockdowns.
Parts of Sandhoogte Road were also upgraded in the process.
At a total cost of R47 990 480.86, the project delivered more than four kilometres of new walkways, 48 new 90° angled parking bays, 145 new parallel parking bays, and a new 40mm bitumen asphalt layer on the road surface of Long Street and Stasie Road.
Working with the bridge over the Great Brak River that was initially built in the sixties, the contractors had to replace and upgrade much of the old infrastructure. The new traffic circle at the Amy Searle intersection also eases traffic flow considerably.
The acting Executive Mayor, Alderman Dirk Kotzé thanked SMEC, the multidisciplinary consulting engineering and infrastructure solutions company, and Entsha Henra Civil Contractors for working closely with the personnel of the Mossel Bay Municipality and the Western Cape provincial government to make a success of the project.
The project was funded in part by the Western Cape provincial government.
Apart from the work on the road surface, new curbs and channels were installed, cracks were sealed, minor stormwater repairs and improvements were done and edge break repairs were done. To assist with community safety, new 200-Watt LED streetlights were installed.
Along Sandhoogte Road, new layer works were constructed, 30mm asphalt was applied, and minor stormwater improvements were done.
The project employed 108 local labourers, 33 of whom were women, and three local SMME subcontractors, namely MP Pule Construction of Mossel Bay, Andris Pikaan Konstruksie of Great Brak River, and Andris Contractor of George.

Long Street and Stasie Road are places of pride for our community," the ward councillor, Annatjie Janse van Rensburg, said.
