The KwaNonqaba Police have released a statement urging residents to be vigilant of possible fraud and shared some safety tips to prevent it.
The tips are as follows:
- Beware of sharing personal information or OTP (One Time Pin) numbers over the phone. Your bank or service provider will never ask you to give out this information over the phone.
- Avoid clicking on links in text messages that could threaten your account access. Contact your bank directly if in doubt.
- Do not disclose confidential details over the phone, even if the caller seems legitimate. Stay vigilant when dealing with unknown persons.
- Do not trust unknown people claiming to be from your bank, even if they mention a hacked account. Contact your bank directly.
- If you receive an unauthorised OTP, contact your bank immediately and do not share this number.
- Avoid clicking on unfamiliar links in emails or messages, regardless of the situation. Stay cautious and protect your information.
- Verify business banking information over the phone before making a deposit. Email accounts can be compromised, leading to incorrect details being shared. Stay secure by confirming directly via the phone.
Always ensure you have your bank's emergency number to report fraud. The KwaNonqaba police can be contacted to report incidents of suspected fraud (044 606 5617/044 606 5629).
