MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The sod-turning ceremony for the Hartenbos Wastewater Treatment Works solar photovoltaic (PV) and battery energy storage system (BESS) took place on Wednesday, 27 November.
The treatment works is implementing a solar PV plant with a BESS.
Solareff, a specialist South African renewable energy solutions company, has been appointed to design, engineer and install this solution, which operates as a microgrid for the site.
The project started in April this year and is expected to be completed by the end of September next year.
Under normal conditions the system will be connected to the grid (Eskom).
If the grid supply is interrupted, the BESS will take over supply first, supported by the solar PV system during sunlight hours.
Standby diesel generators will provide additional support if both the batteries and grid supply (or solar generation) are unavailable.
