MOSSELBAY NEWS - As part of its April Autism Awareness Month Campaign the Education and Training Hub for Autism Needs (ETHAN) ran a School Autism Awareness and Acceptance Competition.
Three members of the ETHAN Team - Alicia Barnard, Herchell Theys and Obed Theys - visited 15 local schools and pre-schools, inviting them to take part in an exciting autism awareness facebook competition.
The schools were encouraged to create a short video showcasing how they actively created autism awareness and acceptance within their school and community.
They were then tasked with posting their video on facebook with #autismparade and tagging @ethanproject. The school with the most number of likes received on facebook would be awarded a prize.
ETHAN is proud to announce that the winner of its facebook School Competition is St Blaize Primary School. The school already received a surprise visit from the ETHAN mascot, Blu, and the ETHAN team.
Diane Hobbs, director of ETHAN, handed over the trophy and prize money of R2 000 to the principal, André Muller.
All the children were gathered into the assembly area and were delighted to have a visit by Blu, and to see their beautiful trophy. To top it off they said their winning chant, Ons ondersteun outisme.
"Well done to the principal, teachers and learners of St Blaize. ETHAN and Blu will definitely be back during the course of the year to run their I'm Autism Friendly Training.
"This will further help to help the learners at St Blaize in understanding what autism is and how to be a friend to someone who is different.
"ETHAN thanks all the schools who made a concerted effort to raise autism awareness, in particular Little Lighthouse and Darling Ducks, who really went the extra mile," says Hobbs.
