MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Mossel Bay Municipality is warning its contractors that tricksters may be targeting them.
It has come to the attention of the municipal supply chain management division that two municipal contractors recently received telephone calls from persons who pretended to be employees of the municipality.
Strange requests were made. In one case the contractor reported that the scammers requested refreshments from the company. In another case a request was made that money should be transferred via e-wallet.
It seems as if the fraudsters are accessing information from the list of awarded tenders on the municipality website. This information is then used to make it seem as if the communication is legitimate.
The municipality has identified a number of suspects and the necessary procedures will follow.
However, it reiterates that no contractor will be called on to alter contractually agreed upon payment methodologies.
Also, the municipality will not elicit donations or benefits from contractors unless specifically sanctioned to do so by the municipal manager or executive mayor.
