MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Three rehabilitated seagulls were released by the Seabird and Penguin Rehabilitation Centre (Saprec) at Santos Beach in Mossel Bay on Saturday 25 April.
The birds were temporarily in Saprec's care, undergoing treatment for botulism, better known as food poisoning.
As they were successfully cured of their ailments, they had to be released back into the wild.
In some video footage shared with Mossel Bay Advertiser, the seagulls are transported to the beach in three black boxes, which are then carefully opened by Saprec members.
As some curious members of the public stand by, watching, the seagulls calmly step out onto the sand, stretch their wings and walk a few steps forward, before eagerly taking flight.
Saprec and the onlookers gave a small round of applause as the birds flew away from the beach.
Saprec is a non-profit organisation based in the Mossdustria area and works in conjunction with scientists, vets, the state and marine centres to treat and rehabilitate seabirds, including the endangered African penguin.
The centre is open daily for visitors, except on Tuesdays and Friday mornings. Visiting times are either 08:45 or 13:45.
