MOSSEL BAY NEWS - On Tuesday, 10 August, Thembalethu resident Abongile Zinto (32) made a brief appearance in the Mossel Bay Magistrate's Court following the fatal shooting of Bangladeshi, Habibur Rahmaan, on Friday, 6 August at his shop in Sampson Street in Extension 23.
The incident took place at about 19:30 that evening.
Rahmaan was shot at point blank range while standing behind the counter of his shop. Another Bangladeshi who was sleeping in the living quarters at the back of the shop was shot in his leg and is being treated in a Garden Route hospital.
Police did not wish to reveal which hospital for security reasons, because the circumstances surrounding the shooting are still being investigated.
Zinto was caught while he was driving a white Golf on the N2 near the George Airport shortly after Rahmaan was shot dead. Police went on a chase for the vehicle eye witnesses described.
Police spokesperson, Captain Malcolm Pojie, says a preliminary investigation suggests that Zinto dropped off three other suspects linked to the incident before he was arrested.
It seems Zinto stopped the vehicle on the N2 and the three suspects climbed out and fled into a bushy area.
Police have since launched a manhunt for the three suspects.
The reason behind the fatal shooting is not yet known but police confirmed that nothing was stolen during the incident.
Zinto remains in custody and will appear in court again on 17 August for a formal bail application. He is being charged with murder.
