The current cemetery is nearing capacity. However, the development will not necessarily follow soon, as budgetary and other planning processes still have to follow.
Portions of the property, owned by the Mossel Bay Municipality, were historically used as a ploughed agricultural land that has been lying fallow for years.
The site is located conveniently close to residential areas that would mainly use this facility.
The authorisation includes an access road off Louis Fourie Road immediately east of the refuse dump with a length of approximately 475 meters to the site. It also allows for parking and ablution facilities.
The proposed development will be limited to a precise section to avoid the endangered butterfly habitat and to make provision for the future re-alignment of the access road to Dana Bay.
The realignment of Flora Road is required by SANRAL and is included in the draft Roads Master Plan and will tie in with Crotz Street in KwaNonqaba to form a fourth leg of the intersection.
An area of approximately four hectare in the south-western corner must therefore be set aside as a butterfly conservation area and should be rehabilitated with alien vegetation being removed.
No objections were received by the department against the proposed development. Anyone with the intention to appeal this decision should submit appeal forms either by post to the Western Cape Ministry of Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, Private Bag X9186, Cape Town 8000 or fax it to 021 483 4174.
