MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The man charged with the murder of 31-year-old Ayadulela Williams on 21 December was denied bail during his appearance at the Mossel Bay Magistrate's Court today, 3 January.
Isiphele Modwantsi (28) appeared in court on charges of assault and murder.
He was arrested after he allegedly stabbed Williams in the chest while Williams was outside his home in Transand, KwaNonqaba on the evening of 21 December.
Williams was declared dead at the scene by emergency medical services, and Modwantsi was arrested later that same evening.
The court heard today that Modwantsi had previously been arrested on charges of assault earlier last year, on 24 August, after he allegedly assaulted Williams with a hammer.
The matter went to court, and Modwantsi was released on bail, but on 3 December, the case was struck from the court roll due to an outstanding investigation.
Investigating officer, Warrant Officer Geoffrey Moos of the KwaNonqaba Police Station told the court during today's bail application that on the morning of 21 December, Modwantsi had seen Williams visiting people at a house in Transand.
It is alleged that Modwantsi had wanted Williams to drop the assault case against him and then allegedly produced a knife. Moos said that, according to eyewitnesses, the people in the house told Modwantsi to leave.
That same evening, Modwantsi saw Williams again, this time, outside Williams' home. It is alleged that Modwantsi approached Williams and then stabbed him in the chest.
Bail was denied to Modwantsi. The magistrate said that if he were released, the accused could endanger the lives of the witnesses in the case and that he may flee to avoid prosecution.
The matter was remanded to 14 February.
