MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The Inspectorate recently conducted an Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) inspection at a workplace in Mossel Bay, amid the COVID-19 outbreak. The employer was found to be in contravention of the OHS Act and a prohibition notice was served which prevents operations from continuing at the workplace.
The Department has since been informed that the employer did not honour the prohibition notice and continued with their operations.
The Provincial Chief Inspector (PCI) now intends to visit the workplace to determine if the workplace is still in operation. If this is the case, the South African Police Service (SAPS) will be requested to arrest the employer as non-compliance to the OHS act is deemed as a criminal offence.
It is expected that SAPS will accompany the PCI to the workplace today (Tuesday, 07 April 2020).
