MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The Junior Town Council elective workshop on 16 and 17 August at the Hartenbos Municipal Offices resulted in junior leaders being much more savvy when it comes to public speaking.
The junior councillors were also briefed on the code of conduct of Junior Town Council Members and the constitution of the Mossel Bay Junior Town Council.
The Junior Town Council consists of four representatives from each of the six high schools in the greater Mossel Bay and serves as an organization that represents the aspirations of the younger generation and to offer the youth a mouthpiece to voice their opinion on civil matters.
The Junior Council members regularly engage on projects that benefits especially the young people as they work to stimulate a mutual understanding and appreciation between schools in and around Mossel Bay and promote relations between the different language groups.
The two day workshop on public speaking and parliamentary procedures was facilitated by Claire du Plessis of the Routz Institute for Language, Arts, Heritage and Culture. Participants were challenged to write a one to two minute speech and to incorporate the parliamentary procedures when giving their talk.
Participants were then challenged to do impromptu speeches from words drawn from a hat before Chris Balie from the IEC, Cape Town Office, facilitated a session on the South African Constitution, the Bill of Rights and democracy.
Yolandé van Aswegen of the municipality facilitated the session on the code of conduct of Junior Town Council Members and the constitution of the Mossel Bay Junior Town Council.
Mossel Bay's junior town councillors, representative of all six high schools in the greater Mossel Bay attended a valuable workshop to hone their skills this past weekend.
