MOSSEL BAY NEWS - A task team from the Hawks is investigating a cash-in-transit robbery in Mossel Bay that took place on Monday, 18 February.
The first report of the incident was at about 11:38, when a security alert was activated at Mikeva Hyper in Bill Jeffrey Street. Police reported that two armed men robbed cash-in-transit security guards who had collected cash from the store.
Police did not wish to disclose the amount of money stolen, despite rumours on social media that it was more than R4 million.
Although police originally said that the robbery took place outside the business, video footage shared on social media showed two suspects standing at a till in Mikeva, seemingly buying goods.
They then walk up to the security guard who is walking with the cash, point a gun at him, take the money and run off.
A special task team from the Hawks took over the investigation on Monday afternoon, 18 February.
Hawks Western Cape spokesperson, Captain Philani Nkwalase, says the Hawks are leading a multi-disciplinary team which includes other members of the SAPS.
Nkwalase said no guards were injured during the incident and that the investigation was ongoing. He did not wish to comment on the type of vehicle the suspects fled in. "We are investigating all possibilities."
