MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The Garden Route SPCA Mossel Bay has urged locals and visitors to the area not to leave their pets in the car.
With summer in full swing, the SPCA posted to its Facebook page that it only takes a few minutes for a car to turn "into a deadly oven for your furry companion".
"We are seeing it more and more and we cannot emphasise strongly enough the danger you put your animals in when leaving them alone in a car. Not to mention the fact that you can be prosecuted under The Animal Protection Act 71 of 1962," stated the post.
The post also stated that on a mild day of 21°C, the temperature can reach 38°C within just 20 minutes in a vehicle.
"This poses a serious risk of heatstroke, organ failure or death. Dogs cannot regulate their body temperature as efficiently as humans. They rely on panting and limited sweat glands in their paws."
The post stated that even if the temperature is not extreme, being left alone in a confined space can cause a dog stress and anxiety that can lead to panic, barking and other distressing behaviors.
"The dog might also try to escape through partially open windows, which can result in injury."
The SPCA Mossel Bay asked the community to keep their pets safe.
"Always remember, if you see something, say something," stated the post.
