MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Miss Valentine 2021 Marsha Walker and members of the community have been collecting bread tags for about four years now for a specific purpose.
Walker said she was inspired by an article she read in a pamphlet at church, explaining how collecting bread tags could make life easier for the disabled.
Since then she and people from the community have been collecting bread tags wherever they go, to make the donation of a wheelchair possible.
Bread tags come in many shapes, sizes and colours. They are made of high impact polystyrene and have a good recycling value.
It takes about 200kg of tags for one wheelchair to be bought. On a global map, Africa represents one of the world's largest populations in need. The remotest areas are often forgotten and those in need in these areas would ordinarily never have the slightest chance of the gift of mobility.
"Our collection of bread tags may seem odd, or even a waste of time, and a lot of people just throw them away, but to me and this special group of people with a heart of gold standing next to me and even those at home that could not be here for the photo, this little tag means a lot," said Walker.
She believes the joy of giving is one of life’s greatest gifts.
Through the Wheelchair Foundation, the gift of mobility and a chance for a better quality of life is given to people all across the globe.
"Please save your bread tags and drop them off at one of the collection points," Walker asks.
