MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The Mossel Bay Municipality's Brandwag pedestrian bridge project received an accolade at the SANRAL SAICE (South African Institute for Civil Engineering) 2022 National Awards.
It received a commendation for most outstanding civil engineering project in the category, community-based project. The project was completed by Royal Haskoning DHV.
The bridge offers safe passage to pedestrians, many of them children, across the R328 between Mossel Bay and Oudtshoorn. The R328 divides Brandwag into two neighbourhoods, causing difficulty for residents wanting to visit shops, churches and the local school.
The long-anticipated bridge not only ensures greater safety but also unified the community symbolically.
Construction started in January 2021 and on 28 September 2021, the bridge that cost more than R11 million was officially opened.
The construction was made possible by the provincial government's municipal infrastructure grant which covered 92.2% of the cost. The Mossel Bay Municipality covered the remaining 7.8%.
The SANRAL SIACE awards were hosted earlier in September. Three hundred guests attended the event held in Montecasino, in Fourways, Johannesburg, while others followed the proceedings online.
