MOSSEL BAY NEWS - On Thursday morning, 1 August, Mossel Bay residents discovered Ally, a southern elephant seal, resting on rocks.
The Stranded Marine Animal Rescue Team (S.M.A.R.T.) said the people who spotted her promptly reported her presence to S.M.A.R.T. and the team went out to ensure her safety and wellbeing.
Val Marsh, from the organisation, said the team monitored her the whole day and by the next morning she had left.
Ally made a return on Tuesday, 6 August. Marsh said Ally enjoyed the warm sun on our beaches and that S.M.A.R.T. monitored her again.
S.M.A.R.T. provided some interesting facts about these seals.
"Southern elephant seals are the largest seal species in the world. Males can weigh up to 4 000kg and measure up to five metres in length, while females can weigh up to 900kg and reach lengths of three metres.

"These impressive creatures are known for their deep-diving abilities, often reaching depths of more than 1 500 metres to hunt for squid and fish.
"Elephant seals are typically found in sub-Antarctic and Antarctic waters, coming ashore on remote beaches and islands for breeding and moulting. The species is named for the males' large proboscis, which resembles an elephant's trunk and is used to produce loud roaring noises during the breeding season.
"While not currently endangered, elephant seals face challenges from climate change and human activities, making conservation efforts essential for their continued survival."
