MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The widow of South African artist George Enslin and her daughters will be visiting the Western Cape from 25 March to 2 April.
Noriko Enslin, who lives in Japan, asks that anyone who may have met her on her previous trips to South Africa and who may be interested in her late husband's art or own his art, contact her (enslinweskaap@gmail.com) via email.
Noriko visited South Africa in 1982 and 1997.
George Enslin's works are collector's items. He did a number of paintings of District 6 in Cape Town. He was born in 1919 and died in 1972. This year is the 100th anniversary of his birth.
From 1938 to 1939, George studied art under Artúr Podolini-Volkman in Cape Town.
In 1946 he studied at the Continental School of Art (founded in 1946), Cape Town, under Maurice van Essche. He had his first solo exhibition two years later.
A family friend told the Mossel Bay Advertiser: "Mrs Enslin will stay in Somerset West when she visits South Africa. She would like to make contact with people in the Western Cape who knew George, knew of George and his family or who have any of his works."
George was a prolific artist and his works are included in a number of public collections.
He and Noriko married in Osaka, Japan in 1966. Their marriage was illegal under South African law at that time so they registered their marriage in England and lived in Greece. They arrived in Greece in 1967.
In 1970 George did a six-month tour of South Africa, visiting family and friends with his then two-year-old daughter. Exhibitions were held in Pretoria, Bloemfontein, Windhoek, Johannesburg, Sasolburg, Klerksdorp and Cape Town. George died in Athens, Greece, two years later.
