MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Charles Theunissen and Lluyle Arendse, two locals who frequently contribute to Mossel Bay Advertiser, were honoured at the Western Cape Cultural Affairs Awards yesterday evening, 10 September, at the Artscape Theatre in Cape Town.
Theunissen regularly pens Mossel Bay’s rugby news and Arendse often puts his thoughts in a column known as ‘Lluyle’s Lens’ for the newspaper.
The Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Ricardo Mackenzie, handed over awards on behalf of the department to several nominees and winners from all over the province.
Theunissen was awarded for community-led research or public programme in the field of heritage, museums or geographical names, while Arendse, who is based in Great Brak River, earned a nomination for most impactful contribution of an artist/organisation in the literary arts discipline.
He was one of three top practitioners in the Western Cape for his work as a writer and poet.
Although he did not win, he said he was “honoured to be in conversations with legends who made an impact in years of experience I still need to live for”.
Theunissen says he expected to receive his award, due to his extensive contributions to Mossel Bay’s history over the past 35 years.
He told the Advertiser his three books, newspaper articles, historical exhibitions, photographs and in-depth research over the years culminated in this prestigious honour, which he is very proud of.
