GARDEN ROUTE | KAROO NEWS - The public is reminded that visits to correctional and remand detention centres remain suspended in the current Covid-19 alert level 4 regulations announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa on Sunday 27 June.
The permission to make such visits had already been suspended following the announcement of Covid-19 adjusted alert level 3 earlier this month.
According to a press statement by Sechaba Mphahlelethe of the Department of Correctional Services (DCS), these measures enable them to continue protecting both officials and inmates.
"DCS has been implementing restrictions and adhering to all regulations to mitigate against the spread of Covid-19. Contact consultations between legal practitioners and inmates are allowed under strict conditions observing all necessary protocol and legal practitioners should make prior appointments at centres they need to visit. DCS' top priority remains the health and safety of our officials, inmates and the public," Mphahlelethe said.
As at 20 June this year, the total number of active Covid-19 cases in the DCS [countrywide] amount to 256, comprising of 224 officials and 33 inmates. The total cumulative positive cases are 12 202, of which 7 711 are officials and 4 491 inmates.
A total of 180 officials and 78 inmates countrywide have died due to Covid-19 related complications.
