MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The whole world is battling the trash epidemic and while plastic, for instance, has many valuable uses, we have become addicted to single use or disposable plastic.
This has severe environmental consequences, not only for South Africa, but for the whole world. Some of the devastating statistics are that every minute one million plastic drinking bottles are purchased around the world. Even more serious is that five trillion single use plastic bags are used worldwide every year.
And these bottles and plastic bags form part of our everyday life and we find them lying and flying all over our town.
With the co-operation of councillors of the Mossel Bay Municipality, the Garden Route SPCA has managed to secure bins, which are situated at the Mossel Bay SPCA offices.
The bins that arrived on 8 July are available for use and form part of the environmental campaign to educate the children of the area about disposal and recycling of rubbish.
Young children frequently visit the SPCA clinic, mostly for food and deworming tablets for their animals. The SPCA has decided to instill a sense of responsibility in the younger generation.
They are encouraged to collect and bring in recyclable trash in order to receive the food and tablets. By doing this the SPCA is helping to change the thought pattern from "wanting" to "by giving you are also receiving".
"Hopefully this will turn into developing habits of cleaning up the environment where you stay, while being rewarded in order to help your pet," an SPCA spokesperson said. "A big thank you goes to Stephan Henque, who is assisting the SPCA with collecting the waste with a skip."
Staff at the Mossel Bay SPCA await your visit and your recyclable trash in exchange for pet care.
