MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The Voorbaai Pump Station opposite the VW garage is an important link between the various sewer collection points in Mossel Bay and the Hartenbos Waste Water Treatment Works and caters for approximately 60% of the effluent from various industries, businesses and residential areas.
The pump station is equipped with three pumps with a sewer delivery rate of about 200 l/s to ensure smooth and continuous transfer of effluent to the Hartenbos Waste Water Treatment Works.
The sump and retention dam at the pump station are capable of retaining the sewer inflow for approximately 2.5 hours to prevent spillages into the Twee Kuilen River in the event of blockages or power failures.
As problems are often encountered with illegal discharge of foreign objects into the sewer system, grinders have also been installed at the pump station to eliminate solids and to shred debris that cause blockages and damage to downstream pumps and pipelines, especially during peak periods.
Following the unfortunate spillage incident in December last year which caused contamination of the Twee Kuilen River and immediate surroundings, a state of the art telemetry system has been installed at the pump station to remotely monitor the operation of the machinery at the pump station and to continuously monitor the status of the sump and the retention dam.
Alarms are transmitted to electricians and fitters who generally respond to any abnormal conditions at the pump station within 15 minutes.
