MOSSEL BAY NEWS - A penguin sighting is not unusual in Mossel Bay and surrounds. However, at the start of the winter holidays, visitors to the aquarium at the Point were met with a rather surprising sight when Surfie the penguin welcomed them.
Indigo the octopus is waiting to greet visitors by reaching up to them from her rock pool exhibit, between bouts of playing with one of her coloured plastic balls.
Even Bonnie and Bean, the resident friendly sharks, are a joy to meet up close and personal, for those marine lovers that would like to take a swim with them.
The aquarium is home to a variety of tropical sea creatures from reef environments, among others, and no trouble is spared in making them feel right at home despite their being far, far away from their natural habitats.
The latest "family member" to have been welcomed here, is the exquisite plate-shaped cichlid fish from the Amazon River and its tributaries. Water in the Amazon has a tea-stained hue, caused by the vast amount of vegetation washed into the river from the surrounding jungle and the aquarium has imported boxes of Ketapang jungle leaves to emulate this effect.
