This egg is the second of "Happy Feet". Last year in June, she also successfully hatched a beautiful little penguin that was eventually released at Boulders in Simons Town.
The other egg should hatch about 10 days after the first. This will be Disci and Dommi's first hatchling!
The Greenery Club of Point High School found an penguin on Diaz beach on 17 April, that was badly injured and drenched in diesel.
Dr Frans de Graaff found that it had fractured its tibula and fibia very badly.
The fracture was displaced and an intermedulary pin was used to stabilise the tibia. It is due to the dedication of the staff of SAPREC and Dr De Graaff's excellent knowledge and skill, that we can report that little "Greenery" is doing very well! All the diesel has been removed through gentle washes every third day, and it is eating very well!
This is such an amazing story where the youth of Mossel Bay, Dr De Graaff and SAPREC could work together to save this little penguin's life!
The community is asked to call Carol Walton immediately at 082 364 3882 if a penguin is found on a beach.
More good news from the centre is that two penguins will be ready for release very soon. They just need the final 'OK' from Dr De Graaff.
