This group was formed in 1994 and named after the first HIV positive person, Piet Julies, to disclose his HIV status in Mossel Bay. Upon his death, Julies left R250 to be used for the care of the HIV infected.
The action group has come a long way since, incorporating a home based care programme, funded by Department of Health, their HIV/AIDS social care and support plan, as well as education and awareness programme supported by the Departments of Social Development and Education.
Golf day
This year, the action group will be hosting a golf day as part of their fundraising efforts, taking place on Saturday, 1 December at the Mossel Bay Golf Club. Prior to that, they are manufacturing and selling the now iconic AIDS-ribbon, handmade in the traditional fashion of Zulu love letters.
These are selling at R5 each and the action group has set a goal of distributing no less than 5 000 in Mossel Bay and surrounding areas.
Group Editors, owner of the Mossel Bay Advertiser, has taken up the challenge and ordered 100 units of these special AIDS-ribbons and would like to encourage other local businesses to day the same.
For more information on the golf day or to place orders for AIDS-ribbons, contact the Piet Julies Aids Action Group at 044 606 5184.

Clients of the Piet Julies Action Group are manufacturing special AIDS-ribbons, to be sold at R5 per unit in celebration of World Aids Day this year. Insert: AIDS-ribbons made in the Zulu love letter style.
