MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Food shortages in poor communities and how to care for those who are needy or at risk of contracting Covid-19 are problems faced by people nationwide.
Not knowing which charity to donate to, which supplies they need and how to get the supplies to them when travel has been restricted, are obstacles in the way of people making donations.
Mossel Bay Covid-19 Donations, Supplies and Information was started as a direct response to the current crisis and in the anticipation that food shortages and hunger in disadvantaged communities would arise due to the lockdown.
It is a secure way for individuals and businesses to contribute to the effort to respond to the pandemic. It functions as an umbrella organisation that works together with several local non-profit organisations (NPOs) such as Street Angels Soup Kitchen, Mosterdsaadjie Feeding Scheme and Solidariteit Helpende Hand to supply food to the less fortunate.
Donations of non-perishable foods will be collected by the group, which has designated persons in most suburbs of Mossel Bay who will collect donations from your home. These donations will then be distributed to the NPOs, who will ensure they reach those in need.
Donations can also be made at Pick n Pay at Langeberg Mall or at Hartenbos Seefront, where clearly marked trolleys are stationed for the public in which to put their donations.
Members of the public are asked to donate the following items for the standard food packages, which will feed two people for two weeks: bread, jam, peanut butter, coffee, tea, powdered milk or coffee creamer, sugar, rice, pasta or instant noodles, chakalaka, potatoes, toilet paper, soya mince, mielie meal, cake flour, margarine, canola or sunflower oil, soap and tinned food such as baked beans.
Mossel Bay Covid-19 Donations, Supplies and Information has also worked with several local businesses to supply law enforcement officials with personal protective equipment (PPE) such as face shields and safety goggles.
For further information about the organisation and how to help, visit Mossel Bay Covid-19 Donations, Supplies and Information facebook page, send them message on their dedicated Whatsapp line (083 632 1233) or call Shawn Mouton (0813618632)
Donations can be placed in one of the marked trolleys in Pick n Pay at Langeberg Mall or Hartenbos Seefront.
