MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The Mossel Bay Municipality is throwing its weight behind the formation of an anti-drug community centre planned for Mossel Bay.
This is insofar as the municipality's portfolio allows.
Last month the first quarterly meeting of the Local Drug Action Committee (LDAC) was held, when the proposed anti-drug centre was discussed.
Although the project is primarily that of the departments of Social Development and Health, the municipality has a vested interest in anti-drug initiatives.
The municipality's director of Community Services Elize Nel and manager of Community Development Haylene Claassen responded to an enquiry from the Mossel Bay Advertiser, noting that the municipality had an interest in the centre because the LDAC is something the municipality drives and Moral Generation is one of the focus points of the municipal GROW strategy.
The municipality noted that this anti-drug centre would not be the long-awaited rehabilitation centre the community so badly needs, but a day centre, without beds for patients.
A rehab centre was still a long-term plan - when funds became available, the municipality stated.
The Social Development and Health departments declined comment, saying the anti-drug centre planning was still in its early stages and no information could be provided yet.
LDAC comprises representatives from Correctional Services, the Social Development Department, the Health Department, Child Welfare, the police, neighbourhood watches, churches, the Mossel Bay anti-drug organisation Omgee Rehab, Heart 2 Heart NPO and other NPOs with an interest in fighting drug abuse.
