MOSSEL BAY NEWS - A church service focused on the youth and schools is taking place in Great Brak River on Sunday, 21 January.
Titled, the Back-to-School Service, it will take place at the AGS Greenhaven church, corner of Pansy and Nerina streets, Great Brak, at 14:00.
Jewel Jonkers
The pastor of the church, Leon Prinsloo, will convene the service.
The guest speaker will be the Eden and Central Karoo district director for Education, Jewel Jonkers.
A psychologist from the Western Cape Department of Education will also speak.
Belinda Pather
The deputy district police commissioner, Brigadier Belinda Pather, and other members of the Garden Route police management will also be present.
Great Brak Police spokesperson Sergeant Lauriane Botha said the church service had been organised in the light of three suicides - of people aged 20 to 30 - which took place in the Great Brak area during December.
Also, during the past week, a child aged 14 attempted suicide, Botha noted.
Fight against social ills
She said the aim of the church service was to unite all role players in the fight against social ills such as suicide, addiction, crime and teenage pregnancy.
She pointed out that teenage pregnancy was a huge problem, with statistics extremely high. The issue has been highlighted in the media over the past month.
Discipline
There would be a focus on discipline at school and in the home. Botha encouraged police, leaders in the community, school management and teachers, parents and schoolchildren to attend the service.
