MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The ACDP leadership in Mossel Bay have made a formal request, via the party’s provincial leadership, to the Western Cape Premier, Alan Winde to lower the lockdown level in Mossel Bay.
The Premier has undertaken to engage the President regarding this proposal. The proposal has been made on the basis that the infection rate in the area is stable, thus presenting low risk.
“ACDP leadership in Mossel Bay have made an urgent request through our provincial leadership to have the lockdown level lowered in order to kickstart the economy in Mossel Bay again and allow people to once again earn a living,” says Mossel Bay ACDP councillor, Jeanette Gouws
This will reduce the fiscal pressure on national government but also ease possible cash flow problems for the Mossel Bay Municipality.”
According to the latest statistics released by the Western Cape government Mossel Bay has remained stable with 19 confirmed cases of COVID 19 and no fatalities. “Except for Knysna which has had one more confirmed case in this last week, the Garden Route has remained largely unchanged although testing is continuing in the district. This situation must however be closely and carefully monitored and if any changes occur a higher level lockdown can again be instituted.
Since Mossel Bay has few access points the area can be easily controlled and secured. This will more than likely require less financial and human resources to police.
“The easing of the lockdown level is absolutely critical for the survival of businesses in our town and the protection of people`s jobs.”
The Department of Social Development is currently only working at one third of their workforce and are stretched beyond capacity. The needs of the poor and affected continue to grow and people are becoming desperate. A return to work is needed to prevent social unrest, civil disobedience and to save the businesses that employ our residents.
“The ACDP fully understands that there is an inherent risk factor involved and believe that all individuals need to be mindful that the Covid-19 virus is still very prevalent in South Africa at this stage and that they should adhere to all necessary personal safety measures.
"For this reason we are not requesting that schools or child care facilities open at this stage and that where possible parents that can work from home continue to do so. Those who are vulnerable, aged or have underlying health conditions are encouraged to continue to self-isolate.”
