The right advice vs advice that sounds right

BUSINESS NEWS - There is a saying that your past experiences in life determine your truth, which is also applicable when it comes to investing.

As an investment adviser, an easy option when signing up a new client would be to give advice that sounds right. However, we prefer to rather focus on giving the correct advice, irrespective of whether it sounds right at the time.

For example, a year ago it might have been an easy option to tell you there is no future in this country, that the JSE offers no value and is a so called ‘value trap’ after offering limited real returns over the last 5 years, especially when taking into consideration load shedding, government spending, unemployment, etc.

In hindsight it would have been the worst possible advice as the rand has strengthened significantly since then and over the last 12 months the JSE, from March 2020 to April 2021, was the best performing market in US dollar terms, outperforming the USA, the UK and China by more than 30% (source: https://www.randswiss.com/newswire/)

Always ensure you have an adviser that is looking through the noise to give you the best possible advice, as the biggest mistake an investor can make is chasing returns while looking in the rear-view mirror.
