MOSSEL BAY NEWS - La Scarpetta, a delightful Italian restaurant, recently opened its doors in Mossel Bay. “Fare la scarpetta” is a phrase in the Italian language that’s close to the heart of everyone who has enjoyed a delicious plate of pasta with sauce.
Meaning “make the little shoe”, it refers to the small piece of bread used to mop up the last of the sauce on your plate.
The owners of La Scarpetta have always had a love affair with Italian food. Until a few months ago there hasn’t been an Italian restaurant in Mossel Bay and one had to drive all the way to George to find one; driving back after a bottle of wine wasn’t an option so it was decided to open an Italian restaurant locally.
Henriette is a career-driven woman (accountant), loving mother of Patrizio, and knows her stuff when it comes to Italian cuisine. She lived in various parts of Italy, such as Rome, Milan and Senigallia for almost six years, and visited many regions while living there and learned about the lifestyle, culture and food.
Tyrone has been in the hospitality industry for more than 10 years and likes doing things the good, old fashioned way, offering people spectacular food, and really good service at a reasonable price. Being passionate about this way of life, he constantly strives to make people feel they haven’t just had a meal, but a memorable experience instead.
Since Mossel Bay is surrounded by the sea, they thought it appropriate to have a signature dish that comes from the sea. The Italian term, ‘’frutti di mare’’, means “fruit of the sea” or seafood.
For anyone who loves both Italian cuisine and seafood, this classic pasta dish is a real treat. Served over a bed of piping-hot tagliatelle, our recipe combines shrimp, prawns, squid, clams and mussels with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and a hint of garlic butter. Our easy prep method ensures this divine seafood dish is cooked to perfection. Add a “scarpetta” (crusty Italian bread) for soaking up every drop of the sauce to complete the meal.
