BUSINESS NEWS AND VIDEO - Life Bay View Private Hospital in Mossel Bay is the first hospital in South Africa and the African continent to purchase the Aesculap AEOS microscope.
This is set to advance its neuro and spinal surgical care as the microscope allows the surgeon and his team to see more and operate more comfortably – especially during long and complicated surgical cases.
The AEOS device is a robotic assisted digital microscope used for micro-surgery and is the first of its kind in the world.

Neurosurgeons benefit from:
- Improved depth perception during procedures as a result of the 3D and digital characteristic.
- The ability to “orbit” around the focus point, referred to as the “lock-on target” by using the robotic arm.
- LED illumination, preventing tissue from drying out.
- Better visibility when removing brain tumours.
- The unique ability to use the indocyanine green fluorescence (ICG) filter, which allows real-time visualisation of tissue perfusion on blood flow in vascular neurosurgery.
The benefits to the surgeon translate into optimal surgical performance, enhanced patient treatment in theatre and, ultimately, improved outcomes.
“The microscope offers advanced features, which are only available in certain countries. From a surgeon’s perspective it makes surgery much safer and it is easier to use with a magnification capability of more than 20x. This is augmented with a very large 3D flat screen. The microscope is easily manoeuvrable around the surgical site and everyone in theatre is able to view the surgery in real-time,” says Dr Herman van Heerden, neurosurgeon at Life Bay View Private Hospital.

“The ergonomics make it user friendly and surgical filters (5-ALA) used in the microscope make glioblastoma surgery more extensive, with improved patient outcomes,” he adds.
Life Bay View Private Hospital manager Nevil Vlok says: “We are excited to offer this new, innovative digital surgical service to the community of Mossel Bay and beyond. We thank our community, doctors, patients and employees for continuing to trust us with their care.”
