MOSSEL BAY SCHOOLS NEWS - Following the release of the IEB results last week, Curro Mossel Bay has every reason to be proud. With the new school year starting this week, learners at this JSE-listed independent education provider can truly draw inspiration from their Class of 2019, who passed the Independent Examinations Board (IEB) matric exam with a 100% pass rate.
Curro Mossel Bay, for the second consecutive year, boasts of being among the top IEB schools nationwide.
The IEB National Senior Certificate (NSC) is internationally recognised.
Top learner
Wiehahn Kamfer, the dux learner of 2019, scored 7 distinctions with an average of 90% and above in all his subjects in the final exam. Like last year's top candidate, Lara van Rooyen, who was accepted by one of the world's foremost academic institutions, Harvard University, Kamfer has been named for an IEB outstanding achievement award. This has been awarded to him for being among the Top 5% IEB candidates in 6 or more subjects and scoring 96% in Life Orientation.
Kamfer was a learner at Curro Mossel Bay for his entire school career and says that given the choice again, he will choose no different. "With classes being smaller, I had wonderful relationships with my teachers. This environment also allows for an almost personalised style of education. You are not just a learner at Curro."
Excited about starting his studies at Stellenbosch University's Tygerberg Campus, Kamfer says his recipe for success is two-fold. "You don't have to study 24/7, but when you do, make sure you are 100% focused. Complete as many old examination papers as possible." Kamfer also did AdMaths, an advanced mathematics curriculum with a matric final exam and certificate, scoring above 90%.
Apart from its 100% pass rate, Curro Mossel Bay's Class of 2019 boasts an 80% Bachelor's degree pass rate.
One address
Offering a turn-key education solution at virtually one address, with a pre-school at Curro Castle, and foundation, intermediate and secondary phases at the main campus, Curro Mossel Bay continues to contribute towards the sustainable growth of South Africa and beyond, by widening access to quality schooling. Developments on campus include four new state of the art laboratories dedicated to the study of information technology and science, where developing minds are sure to get set for future success.
Both Curro Castle as well as the foundation phase boasts new playgrounds catering for individual needs, such as accommodating even younger children at play.
Curro Castle in 2017 had four classes and four teachers. It has since expanded to the current 11 classes, 11 teachers, 8 assistants and 3 students. Babies from as young as 4 months are accommodated, with only 10 in a group.
A broad range of extramural activities are offered and a remedial team is available on campus, if needed.
Other developments at Curro Castle, thanks to its notable growth in numbers, are new classrooms. Both the Curro Castle and Curro Mossel Bay campuses have had an upgrade in security systems to ensure the safety of learners and protection of property.
"We are looking forward to a positive and productive year. My wish for all our learners is to embrace the idea that whatever they can conceive or believe, is achievable. I wish for them to choose not to accept any boundaries or limitations created by false obstacles. My wish is that we will as a collective at Curro Mossel Bay, indeed have 20/20 vision for our future as a school," says Jaco Olivier, Executive Head, Curro Mossel Bay.
Mrs Michelle van der Westhuizen welcomes Lané Esterhuizen and her mother, Chantelle.
