MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Mossel Bay, a jewel of the Garden Route known for its pristine beaches, eco-tourism, and vibrant community, is about to welcome a new player in the automotive scene.
This March, the innovative Chinese brand BYD (Build Your Dreams) will make its debut in town, courtesy of the Southern Sea Motor Group.
As South Africa’s electric vehicle market surges forward, with BYD leading as the world’s largest EV manufacturer after surpassing Tesla in sales, this arrival promises to blend cutting-edge technology with the town’s commitment to sustainability.
Founded in 1994, BYD has evolved from a battery specialist into a global powerhouse in new energy vehicles (NEVs), encompassing battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs).
Backed by investor Warren Buffett since 2008, the company has sold over 3 million vehicles worldwide in recent years, focusing on innovative technologies like the Blade Battery for enhanced safety and range, and dual-mode hybrid systems that seamlessly switch between electric and petrol power.
BYD’s mission to “Cool the Earth by 1°C” aligns perfectly with Mossel Bay’s environmental ethos, offering residents and visitors vehicles that reduce emissions while delivering performance and affordability.
At launch, the Mossel Bay dealership will showcase a diverse lineup tailored to South African drivers, including popular models like the compact Atto 3 SUV, the affordable Dolphin Surf hatchback (starting at around R339,900 for urban commuting with up to 295km range), the sleek Seal sedan, and the versatile Sealion series such as the Sealion 5 PHEV (priced from R499,900 with a combined range of nearly 1,000km) and Sealion 6 DM-i hybrid.
1 3 7 Adding rugged appeal to the mix is the BYD Shark 6 pickup, a plug-in hybrid mid-size truck built on the DMO Super Hybrid platform.
This beast combines a 1.5-litre turbo engine with dual electric motors for 321kW of power, 650Nm of torque, and a 670km combined range, making it ideal for towing up to 2,500kg—perfect for Mossel Bay’s outdoor enthusiasts hauling boats or gear to Diaz Beach.
Upcoming additions like the Atto 2 and Sealion 8 PHEV are also on the horizon for later in the year.
What makes BYD an ideal fit for Mossel Bay? Our coastal lifestyle demands vehicles that are efficient for daily commutes along the N2, yet capable for weekend adventures in the Outeniqua Mountains or trips to nearby Oudtshoorn. BYD’s electric models promote cleaner air, preserving the town’s natural beauty and supporting eco-tourism initiatives.
For those wary of range anxiety in rural areas, the hybrids provide a seamless bridge—offering pure EV mode for short trips and petrol backup for longer hauls, all while slashing fuel costs and emissions.
In a region where sustainability is key, BYD’s value proposition shines: advanced tech at accessible prices, with features like fast-charging Blade Batteries, intelligent safety systems, and luxurious interiors that rival established brands.
The initial phase of the showroom opens next to the Volkswagen service department on Mascador Street.
The dealership is proudly owned by the Southern Sea Motor Group, a family-run business led by father and son, Gideon and Francois Knoetze.
Already stewards of VW Mossel Bay, Ford Mossel Bay, and Ford Oudtshoorn, the group emphasizes exceptional customer service, building on decades of trust in the community.
“We’re thrilled to introduce BYD to Mossel Bay,” says Gideon Knoetze. “Our focus has always been on providing reliable, forward-thinking options, and BYD’s innovative powertrains perfectly complement our portfolio.”
