Thorough need-based research was done, followed by many planning sessions, turning the dream of a dedicated sport academy into a reality in August this year.
The focus of this academy hinges on two strategies, firmly supported by the Department of Correctional Services, being breaking the devastating cycle of crime and the provision of corrective and developmental opportunities, whereby youth offenders can ultimately benefit in the long run.
Mr Eddie Myners, Head of Community Corrections and avid sportsman himself, being the assistant coach of the SWD, was the keynote speaker at this prestigious event. He highlighted the training and support programmes offered to offenders, levels of development, including furthering potential, as well as accredited training.
According to Myners, this academy for youth offenders serves as a vehicle for the development of future galaxies of athletes. Furthermore, it is a practical implementation of chapter three of the White Paper on Correction in South Africa, which outlines that rehabilitation of offenders is a societal responsibility.
Various external stakeholders were mobilised to support this sport academy, including SWD Rugby, SWD Cricket, SAFA, as well as other organisations. This strategic alliance will aim to assist offenders for their future reintegration into the community as a law abiding and socially responsible citizens.
Various dignitaries attended the launch event, including DCS Deputy Regional Commissioner, Mr Freddie Engelbrecht, DCS Area Commissioner, Mrs NP Booi, as well as members of the DCS Western Cape Management Board.

A long awaited goal was reacehd with the opening of the sport academy at the Msosel Bay Youth Centre. The official opening was attended by various dignataries.
