It was billed a great success by Kevin Schwartz, chairperson of the five-person judging panel and president of the International Federation of Body Building (IFBB) Western Province.
Overall winner, John Nel of Port Elizabeth was also the winner of the 40+ Masters category.
"We are overwhelmed by the number of athletes competing in this competition. The Garden Route Casino Bravo Lounge is a fantastic venue with excellent, friendly and helpful staff," says Kevin.
He stressed that body building is a rather expensive sport focusing on the physique of the athlete, and that it is by no means a 'men's-only' sport as ladies compete in several categories, such as the 'ladies beach' and 'fitness bikini' categories. Also encouraging is the participation of young athletes from as young as 15 years.
"The sport has a growing following in the Western Cape with the IFBB Western Province regularly presenting workshops and seminars to assist the competitors with preparations for competitions, as it does not involve merely physique, but also mental fitness," Kevin added. He was assisted by judges Carlo Germishuys, Rob Mellows, Deon Munnik and Asive Suknandan and admitted that choosing the category winners was no easy task as the standard was very high.
The Bravo Lounge was packed to capacity with an enthusiastic crowd who eagerly indicated their favourites of the various categories.
Bernadine Schwartz of Cape Town was a worthy winner of the ladies fitness bikini category.
