SOUTHERN CAPE CRICKET NEWS - Seven of the eight quarterfinalists of the SWD Twenty20 competition were determined after the pool stages were completed over the past weekend.
It is only in Group D that the winner has not been decided and a tough battle is expected this weekend with Pirates United, Knysna Cavaliers and Pioneers the favourites.
The following seven teams advanced to the quarterfinal rounds on 13 October: Union Stars (Pool A), Hartenbos (Pool B), Heidelberg United (Pool C), Mossel Bay (Pool E), Pacaltsdorp United (Pool F), George (Pool G) and Harlequins Forces (Pool H).
It was a tough contest in Pool H with Harlequins advancing on a better net run rate against premier league contenders NMU and a strong contest among the SWD U19s. The SWD player, Yamkela Oliphant, with a brilliant century (149* for Union Stars against Glen Roses – 69 balls, 14x6, 9x4)), was the batting hero of the weekend.
There were, however, three other centuries during the preliminary rounds. Clinton Pietersen (105*; 89 balls, 7x6, 6x4 for Mayflower against Albertinia), Frehan Swanepoel (114*; 90 balls, 5x6, 6x4 for Hartenbos against Albertinia) and Franco Geldenhuys (115*; 80 balls, 12x6, 5x4 for George against Dysselsdorp) were all in destructive form with the bat.
