The atmosphere in the Western Cape’s results centre is one of hushed expectation as parties wait for the outcome.
The African National Congress (ANC) is preparing to concede its losses in the face of major gains by the Democratic Alliance (DA) in the province.
For the DA’s provincial chairperson Anton Bredell the DA’s wins, even in councils where it did not expect to conquer, is testimony to voters being fed up with corruption and a recognition of the DA’s track record in governance
"But there’s huge pressure on us because poverty’s still catching up with us and I think all the DA representatives realise that the next five years are going to be crucial."
For the ANC, it will be back to the drawing board.
