NATIONAL NEWS & VIDEO - Visitors to Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park (HiP) were treated to a once-in-a-lifetime sighting when they witnessed a leopard kill at Bhejane hide.
Guests of tour guide Jason Render, who was then working for Heritage Tours and Safaris based in St Lucia, will forever remember the thrill of their encounter, all of which was captured on video.
It was a winter’s day last June, mid-morning, when Jason decided to park at the hide to give his guests an opportunity to possibly enjoy a close-up sighting of wildlife drinking at the waterhole.
The action began just before 11:00 when a lone leopard, staking out the waterhole, got lucky as a herd of wildebeest came to drink.
The video shows a warthog appearing to want to drink or bathe, but backing off on seeing the leopard, which was initially out in the open near the waterhole’s edge.
After retreating to the shade of an acacia tree, the leopard lay in wait until a herd of wildebeest came to drink.
In a flash, the leopard can be seen launching itself into the middle of the herd and taking down a calf.
‘Our guests were most definitely incredibly happy after this sighting,’ said Jason.
‘After having been a guide for only two years, this was my first sighting of a leopard making a kill.’
This video is something wildlife lovers will surely enjoy as they plan their next trip to one of the local game reserves in celebration of once again being able to do so.
