MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The case against the 30-year-old Matseliso Mastio, the woman who was arrested last week for the alleged possession of 72.5kg marijuana, continued in the Mossel Bay Magistrate’s Court this morning, 24 April, for a formal bail application.
Masito is a citizen of Lesotho, and lives in Durban. She had been travelling to Worcester on a passenger bus on Friday 17 April when it was stopped at a garage near Voorbaai.
A Southern Cape Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie, told Mossel Bay Advertiser the K9 Langeberg Unit acted on some information and pulled over the bus, which had departed from Durban and was on its way to Cape Town.
During their search, the unit’s narcotics detection dog responded to three suitcases, allegedly belonging to the accused.
The authorities discovered the compressed marijuana of an estimated value of just over R241 000.
Masito was arrested on a charge of dealing drugs.
During today’s court appearance, the State indicated that it would oppose bail due to the fact that Masito had provided multiple alternative addresses outside of Mossel Bay, including in Worcester, and that the visitor’s permit allowing her to spend 30 days in South Africa had expired.
For these reasons, the State is concerned she might be a flight risk, and might evade upcoming court proceedings, including a possible trial.
The matter was postponed to 14 May for the continuation of her bail application.
