GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - The South Cape TVET College (SCC) George Campus was in chaos last week and on Monday this week with protesting students interrupting classes.
Elsie Potgieter, the campus principal, says the college experienced student protests mainly at the George campus.
"The protests were due to the application of the DHET TVET College Bursary Scheme (as administered by NSFAS) and their rules and guidelines for students who qualify for the travel or accommodation allowance."
She says these rules and guidelines stipulate that NSFAS may approve bursary applications of students with a household income of R350 000 per annum and good academic performance, for tuition and personal care allowance. Students can apply for a travel allowance if they reside within a 40km radius of the campus or for an accommodation allowance to stay at a campus hostel or private accommodation if their travel distance exceeds 40km from the relevant campus.
"Students could apply for either allowance at the college but not both. Returning students could only apply for either allowance if they progressed to the next level of their qualification."
She asks that all students with outstanding documents hand them in at the bursary office as soon as possible.
The central office team is responsible for final verification and any incomplete applications will be returned to the campus where the campus head, bursary, truancy and/or student support officer will assist students to provide all documentation required.
