MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The Garden Route SPCA has urged pet owners not to use Jeyes Fluid to control ticks and fleas after its Mossel Bay outreach team found a dog that had recently been washed with the product.

The dog was found during the branch’s weekly community outreach on Wednesday 2 September. Its owners believed that Jeyes Fluid was an effective treatment for ticks and fleas.

The SPCA said that, although the product may be used with good intentions, it can cause skin irritation and unnecessary discomfort and is not suitable for use on animals.

The organisation said that this was not an isolated incident and that it continues to encounter animals that have been treated with unsuitable household products.

Pet owners who need help controlling ticks and fleas are encouraged to take their animals to the Mossel Bay SPCA’s dipping station. 

The service is provided free of charge and offers a safe and effective way to treat pets without causing them harm.

The Mossel Bay SPCA conducts weekly outreach visits throughout the greater Mossel Bay area. 

During these visits, the team assists and educates pet owners on responsible animal care, suitable housing and the safe treatment of common problems such as ticks and fleas.
