GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - The head of the Garden Route Disaster Management Centre, Gerhard Otto, said a meeting will be held with the Department of Education about the possible closure of schools in the Garden Route on Wednesday 6 May.
The Garden Route District Municipality (GRDM) released a video in which Otto warns residents of the severe weather conditions predicted for the region.
Otto said the weather warning received is at a level 8, which means it is quite a severe storm.
“We expect tomorrow [Tuesday 5 May] round about 30 to 40, 50mm of rain in places and then on Wednesday the bulk of the rain that can exceed 100 to 200mm even.”
Strong winds (up to 80km/h) and high waves (five to eight metres) are also expected.
The GRDM said these conditions may result in flooding, mudslides, and disruptions to roads and essential services, particularly in the Garden Route and Central Karoo.
