MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Point High School’s first girls’ hockey team has been crowned the champions of the Cape Town International Hockey Tournament’s Evolve Section after securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Union High School from Robert Sobukwe Town (previously Graaff-Reinet) in the final on Sunday 26 July.
The team travelled to Cape Town on Tuesday 21 July, and went on to claim gold after a successful tournament campaign.
The winning goal in the final was scored by Catherine-Lee Gouws, who calmly converted a penalty stroke to seal the title for Point High.
It was the school’s first year participating in the tournament, with the team competing in the Evolve Section alongside the teams in the tournament’s Elite Section.
Catherine-Lee was also recognised for her outstanding performances throughout the competition after being named the tournament’s player of the tournament.

The team’s coach, Gertian van der Linde, told Mossel Bay Advertiser he was incredibly proud of the group of 14 girls. “From the first whistle of the first match to the final second of the final, they played their hearts out,” he said.
Van der Linde said playing seven matches in such a short period while maintaining their energy, determination and character to fight until the very end was a testament to the exceptional team.
“Every player made her contribution and proudly represented the school. The victory in the final was the reward for hard work, dedication and excellent teamwork throughout the tournament. This group showed what can be achieved when talent, discipline and perseverance come together,” he said.
