GOURITSMOND NEWS - The Gouritsmond Road and the low-water bridge over the Gouritz River, which joins the Vleesbaai Road to Gouritsmond, has been reopened to traffic following almost two months of repairs after severe weather caused significant damage in early May.
The Western Cape Department of Infrastructure issued a statement early today, 28 July, stating that during the flooding, significant damage was caused to the road, including a 90m section on the eastern approach with erosion up to 5m deep in some areas.
According to the statement, about 3 000 cubic metres of rockfill and bulk material had to be used on the road during June, while the base layers, which are the primary load-bearing layers in road construction, were reinstated in early July.
The department said by mid-July the priming was completed and the seal on the road is now being applied.
It said the road can be reopened despite the seal not being fully in place yet, but urged motorists to use the road with caution as the works are ongoing, including road markings and danger plate installations.
“We thank our teams and partners for their tireless work. Yet another important route reopened,” the department said.
