Update: Meiringspoort is open for traffic, with a stop and go in place. Motorists are advised to drive with caution.
GARDEN ROUTE | KAROO NEWS - The South African Weather Service has issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms.
These conditions may result in localised flooding of susceptible roads, low-lying areas and bridges, as well as small hail and possible damage to infrastructure due to strong, damaging winds.
The warning applies to the central and western parts of the Free State and North West, the eastern and south-eastern Northern Cape, the extreme western parts of the Eastern Cape, and the north-eastern Western Cape.

Meanwhile, Meiringspoort remains closed following last night’s heavy rain and thunderstorms, which caused rockfalls in the area.
Clean-up operations are currently underway, and the road is expected to reopen after 14:00, depending on safety conditions.
Motorists are advised to make use of alternative routes until further notice and to exercise caution in areas affected by severe weather.
