MOSSEL BAY NEWS - The inaugural Garden Route SPCA ladies' high tea in Mossel Bay on Saturday, 12 November, was well attended, with almost 80 ladies (and a few gents) showing great support for their local Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).
The ladies took the Hats and Heels theme to heart and produced some spectacular and original table decorations.
They enjoyed a flower arrangement demonstration, a presentation by recently-appointed SPCA branch manager Elize Goosen and a high tea spread of savoury and sweet snacks.
The highlight of the morning was an inspirational talk by well-known SA actor Ivan Zimmerman, who brought along his young dog Happy and auctioned a few doggy kisses to help raise an extra R1 000 in funds for the SPCA.
The prize for the most original table décor was awarded to Charlene Baarman, who successfully (and most imaginatively) integrated dog food, bowls and blankets with an elegant tea table and then donated all these dog-related products to the Mossel Bay SPCA branch after the event.
The best self-made hat prizes were awarded to La Rochelle and Charmaine du Preez, or Sylvester and Tweety.
They also donated their hats to be auctioned after the event and raised an additional R500 for their local SPCA.
This tea was coordinated entirely by SPCA volunteer fundraisers who hope to make it an annual event and raise both the income for the SPCA and the good camaraderie factor – so much fun and laughter was enjoyed by a group of like-minded, animal-loving people.
The Garden Route SPCA has noticed a huge increase in cases of neglect since the Covid pandemic and rise in the cost of living.
To help them help these animals, they need people who are prepared to volunteer a little of their time every now and then in the fundraising arena – be it to do some Christmas gift wrapping, standing with a collection can for an hour or giving a little time at an event. Contact Debi (secretary@grspca.co.za) if you are able to help.
