MOSSEL BAY NEWS - 26 September is National Cupcake Day. 

Besides giving you an excuse to indulge your sweet tooth, the day also offers you the chance to "bake a difference" in the lives of children fighting cancer and their families. 

One name in Mossel Bay that is all too familiar as far as this disease is concerned is young Stehan Knuppe, who was diagnosed in 2022 at the tender age of four. 

His mother, Cornel, is now calling on Mossel Bay residents to join this cause. The Knuppes themselves have been on the receiving end of help from this initiative, driven by the organisation Cupcakes of Hope. 

"In 2024, Stehan went through a rough time when he was diagnosed with cancer for the second time, this time a more serious and aggressive cancer, therapy-related acute myeloid leukaemia. We needed to raise funds for the medication he needed, and Cupcakes of Hope immediately came on board and said they would help us run a fundraiser for our little man,” said Cornel. 

"Along with so many of Mossel Bay's amazing volunteers, schools, the municipality as well as some of the local businesses, we started raising the funds. They were with us the whole way, and even now that we are still fighting the aftermath of the stem cell transplant and everything that goes along with that, they are supporting us wholeheartedly." 

Giving back

This year, for the first time, Cornel decided they will be giving back, even if it is just in a small way, like baking a cupcake or donating R20 towards one. 

"My heart goes out to every parent walking this road, as it is one of long, tiring hours travelling to and from hospitals, and long stays in hospitals next to your child's bed; and every step forward may come with its own new set of challenges. 

"I am hoping that we can be that change for a family, like Cupcakes of Hope was for us and still are as we walk this path." All information is available on the Cupcakes of Hope website, but Cornel said anyone is welcome to contact her directly (0825639198) as well, and she will assist them. 

"Having said that, please set your calendars for 26 September and join me and my wonderful team of co-ordinators at the Heiderand Mall and the Langeberg Mall. Look for the Cupcakes of Hope stand and come and say hi to all our friendly volunteers. We are looking forward to 'baking a difference' this year." 

How it works 

Volunteers register to bake 24 cupcakes and drop them off at their selected participating mall, and members of the public make a R15 to R25 donation per cupcake. Simple, fun, and all for a meaningful cause.
