MOSSEL BAY NEWS AND VIDEO - Yesterday photographs were sent to Mossel Bay Advertiser via Facebook messenger of the Australian wild fig tree, on the corner of Church and High streets, on its side.
The tree has a sad history. Someone seemingly tried to destroy it in October 2022 by drilling holes in it and pouring a fuel or chemical in the holes.

There was an outcry about this. It is still not known who the perpetrator was.
At the time the municipality was determined to try to rescue the tree and stated that it was possible to rescue it, implementing a rescue plan.
VIDEO: The tree being sawn up
Although part of the tree seemed to die away after that incident, there were branches of it which were flourishing, with green leaves.
This morning, members of the Parks Department of the municipality were sawing up the branches and loading them on to a truck.
The Advertiser has asked the municipality for comment and will publish it when it is received.
